A secondary school has won recognition for its work in preparing pupils for international careers.

La Sainte Union School, in Dartmouth Park, has been awarded the International School Award by the British Council, a badge of honour for schools providing a global education.

The Catholic girls school, in Highgate Road, was honoured for its links with sister schools in Tanzania, its multitude of foreign school trips and for embedding global issues and culture into its curriculum.

The award is given to schools that teach children to become “global citizens” to prepare them for jobs in an increasingly international economy.

Art teacher Lucy Brooker, who nominated the school for the award, said: “The pupils may be travelling around the world in the future so they need to build an understanding and awareness of different cultures.

“It reflects our own diversity, too – 400 out of 1,200 students have English as a second language. They are citizens of the world and we all must have respect for other people with views different from ours.”
