A budding journalist and a mentoring champion are two of the students being recognised for their high-flying achievements by the Jack Petchey Foundation.
Hornsey School for Girls students Summer Andrew and Brenda Bakatumana will both be attending the charity’s Haringey achievement awards tonight (Wednesday).
As well as attending the finals at the Bernie Arts Centre, nominees received a £250 grant from the foundation.
Summer has been a “dedicated” founding member of the Burnet news club in Year 7 where students research community issues and report on the stories that matter to them.
A writer with grand ambitions, the 11-year-old is putting her grant towards setting up a fake news conference and recording equipment at the school.
Assistant headteacher Charlotte Clarke said: “Summer has been instrumental in leading the group and developing her journalistic skills and support the group to work together in a way that enriches the lives of the members.”
Fellow student Brenda has also been pivotal in helping those around her at the Inderwick Road school.
Brenda volunteered to design the peer mentorship “listening room” poster for a Monday lunchtime drop-in club and, with three other mentees, has volunteered to create a presentation for a Year 7 assembly to increase awareness of the facility.
“Brenda has shown strong befriending skills with both her mentees,” Ms Clarke added.
The 14-year-old decided to spend her grant on new bean bags and board games for the listening room.
