A school has raised thousands of pounds to help tackle a life-threatening condition that was suffered by one of its pupils.
Patrick Kane, a student at the independent University College School (UCS) in Frognal, Hampstead, had to have his right leg amputated below the knee and lost all of his fingers after contracting sepsis as a baby.
The 16-year-old, who was fitted with a bionic arm three years ago, was among a crowd of about 1,200 at the school’s annual fireworks night, which has raised £4,500 for the UK Sepsis Trust. He said his disability “is not all bad news”. He was chosen to carry the Olympic torch through Trafalgar Square in the relay leading up to the Olympic Games last summer.
“Being nominated in itself was humbling, yet words cannot describe the experience itself other than it was the best moment of my life,” he said.
The event was organised by the school’s parents’ guild and given sponsorship by TK International, an estate agents in Heath Street, Hampstead.
