An opportunity of a lifetime has arisen for media-savvy students at City of Westminster College and the College of North West London.
Those with a passion for journalism at the two colleges – which merged back in May – have the chance to take the reins at the Ham&High for a week as part of the Student Takeover 2017 team.
Archant Media and the United College Group have come together to create a competition providing students with the perfect opportunity to show-off your ability, develop some great new skills and add something special to your CV and job or university application.
Any student, currently enrolled on a full-time course at either the College of North West London or City of Westminster College can enter. There is no age restriction and most importantly you do not have to be a media or journalism student to take-part. Whether you are studying ESOL or business programmes, a sports course, a travel & tourism qualification, or psychology A-level, we want you to get involved.
Following a judging process, 10 prize-winning students will be given the chance to ‘takeover’ and run the news output of the award-winning Ham&High for one-week in the spring of 2018.

The journey doesn’t stop there however, with the two students who have impressed the most being offered a paid internship during July and August of next year. Runners-up will receive a range of prizes, and everyone who takes part will receive a prize and a certificate.
Diana Brown, deputy head of student services at the College of North West London, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for students from across our curriculum. Not only will the winners get unbelievable practical experience, but they’ll get a chance to communicate about issues which matter to them with a huge audience.”

Group editor Michael Adkins added: “Having run two successful student takeover projects in recent years I’m extremely excited to be involved in the planning and execution of another project involving the prestigious Ham&High and forward thinking colleges such as City of Westminster and College of North West London.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to get a taste of life in the highly competitive media industry. Those who are successful in forming our Student Takeover 2017 team will get on the job training and mentoring in aspects of editorial and commercial before spending a week with us producing an edition of the Ham&High and running our website and social media channel.
“It’s a work experience placement like no other and will look fantastic on your CV as we support the college in making students work ready when they finish their courses.”
To enter the competition you – either by yourself or as a team – need to come up with ideas, images, sounds, subjects and stories based upon one of the following themes.
? ‘Where I live and learn’, focusing on the place where you live in London and/or the location of your college.
?‘My story begins here’, which is very much about you, your friends and the other students at the college, as well as your aspirations, ambitions and hopes.
Your 150-word submission needs to outline your subject and how you want to tackle the story or idea - whether it be visual, music, audio recording, written, performance or any combination of these.
Send your proposal in an e-mail – including your full name, college and the name of your teacher – with ‘Takeover’ in the subject to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The deadline for submissions is 5pm on November 30.
