He may be headteacher at one of the most prestigious schools in north London, but Mark Beard certainly isn’t one to shy away from bizarre stunts for charity.

The cameras were rolling and 850 pupils watched on with glee as the leader of University College School (UCS) in Frognal, Hampstead, abseiled into the school hall dressed as superhero Batman.

The stunt, on the end-of-term Charity Movies Mufti Day before the Christmas holidays, was in aid of the school’s community action projects, a fundraising appeal to raise money for six chosen charities.

He completed the stunt wearing a costume from online fancy dress retailer Fancy Fresher, which donated £50 to the school’s charities.

Mr Beard said: “Each year I try to come up with creative costumes to motivate and encourage the spirit of giving and charity.

“Our community action projects promote our core value of social responsibility and raise much needed donations for our chosen charities.”

UCS is one of 12 independent schools that are members of the prestigious “Eton Group”.
