A Hampstead art school hosted a show of brightly-coloured artworks by Ugandan children who had never even see a paintbrush before.
Hampstead School of Art in Kidderpore Avenue held an exhibition of paintings by disadvantaged children on the walls of a new gallery space.
The works were created by youngsters taking part in an art project run by Hampstead-based social enterprise Artbeez, which helps underprivileged children across the globe to learn about, make and sell art.
The show has so far raised about £6,000 from sales for a new art centre for the children, some of whom did not know what paint was until they took part in the project. School principal Isabel Langtry said: “We have a range of paintings, which are an expression of their everyday lives, so we have a lot of gorillas because they are from a part of Uganda where [the 1988 film] Gorillas in the Mist was filmed.
“The children had a great time exploring ideas about where they live.”
