COMMUNITY-MINDED residents are all signing up to join the Ham&High in a special project to support elderly residents.

This year we have joined, as media partners, charity event Mitzvah Day, which advocates everyone getting out and doing good deeds on one special day. This year it’s on November 21.

As a specific Ham&High project we are calling on residents and other community figures to join us visiting every elderly persons home in the areas we cover from Hornsey and Crouch End, Hampstead, Golders Green and Camden Town to Maida Vale and Marylebone.

First to sign up was South End Green choir Fleet Singers who will be out that day entertaining residents in Camden. Choir leader Pam Gilby said: “We are a community choir and anything which seeks to engage the community is good to be part of.”

Meanwhile the local Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have taken up the theme as a way to prove their dedication to the coalition’s Big Society.

Politicians taking part have been reminded that no party politics can be employed on the day so they’ll be carrying out community activities like everyone else – singing and playing board games.

But regardless they seem happy to put down the pamplets and sing from a community song-sheet.

Conservative spokesman David Douglas told the Ham&High: “Chris Philp and Hampstead Conservatives will again join in the Mitzvah Day activities. All the team enjoyed it last year.”

A group of Conservatives from Hampstead Garden Suburb, lead by Cllr John Marshall, will also be taking part and a team of five Hampstead residents will be joining Liberal Democrat Linda Chung on a visit too.

Other politicians and community groups have pledged their support and the Ham&High is hoping school choirs, traders groups and other local people step forward. All you need to take part is a group of people willing to join you – friends, colleagues, family members or even a few kindly souls from your local pub. Those taking part must be willing to sing, play board games or chat to residents in a home in their area.

Anyone interested simply needs to send an email to hamandhighchallenge@mitzvahday.org.uk and we will confirm all the details necessary. We will ensure you are assigned a home and you can state a preference if you prefer.
