A campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse among young people has seen calls to a sexual violence and relationship abuse helpline rise by a third.
More than 120 people rang the Camden Safety Net domestic abuse support service in the two months following the launch of Camden Council’s Know This Isn’t Love campaign in March.
It is a rise of about 33 per cent from the same period last year, when 92 youngsters and concerned parents contacted the helpline.
The campaign aims to highlight signs of relationship abuse amongst young people aged between 14 and 24.
Cllr Sarah Hayward, leader of Camden Council, said: “We know that young people are less aware of what constitutes abuse, and do not always know what to do when they experience these types of behaviours first hand, or how to support friends and family who they think may be victims.
“In Camden we wanted to meet this new challenge and help change attitudes and behaviours in order to prevent further generations suffering physical, emotional, sexual or psychological abuse within relationships.”
