Developers who illegally demolished a Maida Vale pub have put it up for sale before they have finished rebuilding it.

The Carlton Tavern, in Carlton Vale, has been listed by estate agent David Coffer Lyons (DCL) which is inviting freehold and rental offers for the building.

The developer and owner of the pub, CLTX, sparked fury both locally and nationally when it bulldozed the interwar pub in April 2015, with no prior warning or permission to do so.

The pub is still only half built despite a ruling by a government Planning Inspectorate in 2016 that the pub should be rebuilt “in facsimile” by July this year.

In February 2016 the pub was made an Asset of Community Value, meaning the local community should have an option to buy it if it is listed for sale.

Rob Cope, of Friends of Carlton Tavern, said: “We are concerned and watching the situation carefully. It is very unclear what is happening and CLTX continues not to talk to anyone in the community.”

Polly Robertson, chair of Rebuild the Carlton Tavern added: “We are very angry. We are being kept in dark and have been trying to speak to the council about timelines for the rebuild and now sale but they don’t answer us.”

Plans listed by DCL are for a three-storey brick building under a pitched tiled roof. A large “trade area” on the ground floor will have “ancillary accommodation”. A basement will consist of a beer cellar and more accommodation and there will be a beer garden at the back.

The pub, which dates back to 1920, was knocked down shortly before it was due to be given a Grade II listing by Historic England.

CLTX, based in Tel Aviv and owned by Ori Calif, called in bulldozers after its application for planning permission in January 2015 to replace the pub with a bar and block of flats, was rejected by the council.

Council chiefs then handed CLTX an enforcement notice ordering them to rebuild the pub “brick by brick”. CTLX refused and appealed the decision but the Planning Inspectorate found in favour of the council.

A spokesperson for DCL said: “The building work will be completed in the next couple of months. We are marketing it as a lease or sale and completion will take place after construction.”

Westminster Council said it was monitoring the situation.
