Police have searched the parliament office of a Labour lord as part of investigations into historic child sex abuse allegations.

Leicestershire Police officers searched the House of Lords office of Lord Greville Janner, 85, having previously searched his luxury flat in West Heath Road, Hampstead, in December.

The House of Lords search took place in March but details of it have only just been released by police.

It is understood to be part of a probe into historic child sex offences alleged to have taken place in the Leicestershire area.

No arrests have been made as part of the investigation but a preliminary prosecution file relating to Lord Janner has been sent to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) by officers.

Lord Janner, a former Labour MP representing Leicester North West and then Leicester West for 27 years, was made a life peer on his retirement from parliament in 1997 as Baron Janner of Braunstone, in Leicestershire.

The father-of-three, whose wife of more than 40 years died in 1996, became a barrister in 1954 and was appointed a QC in 1971.

He is associated with a number of Jewish organisations having served as president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews from 1978 to 1984.

A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: “Leicestershire Police can confirm that in March 2014 its officers carried out a search of part of the House of Lords in connection with an ongoing enquiry into non-recent child sexual abuse.

“A search warrant was obtained in advance from a Crown Court judge and the search was conducted in accordance with established House of Lords procedures, and monitored by senior officials from the House of Lords.

“No arrests or charges have been made, and enquiries continue.”

No one was available for comment in Lord Janner’s parliamentary office when contacted by the Ham&High.
