Roy “Budgie” Moule, the landlord of the Hornsey Tavern, on the High Street, told the Ham&High the man ran into the pub and said: “Help me, Bud, I’ve been stabbed.”

Mr Moule believes the man was stabbed near the back of the pub in a gang-related incident around 9pm on Tuesday.

Police and paramedics were called, and a 39-year-old man was taken to an east London hospital.

He is currently in a serious but stable condition.

Mr Moule said the victim was “very scared, very frightened – he was in shock”.

And he believes if it had not been for the quick response from the nurse, the man could easily have died.

“[There was] blood all over the place,” Mr Moule said. “He came in the side door. He virtually collapsed.”

Mr Moule described how the nurse, Louise Williams, who was “enjoying her evening drink”, leapt into action.

She called for a bath towel and pressed it against his stomach while a customer called an ambulance.

“She put him on the floor and saved his life – she really is a bit of a hero,” Mr Moule said.

“He was lucky,” the landlord added. There were around 35 people in the pub watching the football when the incident happened.

Mr Moule said the incident was completely unconnected to the pub, but may have involved Hornsey gangs.

He believes there was a dispute over money.

Mr Moule, who has been a landlord for 11 years, said there had been gang-related trouble in the area, but that things had been quiet in the last few years.

A police spokesman said: “Police were called at approximately 21:10pm on May 3 to reports of a man stabbed in High Street.

“Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and the man, aged 39, was taken to an east London hospital for treatment - he remains there in a serious but stable condition.”

There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.

A London Ambulance spokesman said: “We were called at 9.09pm on May 3 to reports of a stabbing incident on the High Street in Hornsey.

“We sent a number of resources, including an ambulance crew, a single responder by car and London’s Air Ambulance, arriving within eight minutes.”

The spokesman continued: “We treated a man for stab wounds and took him to a major trauma centre.”
