A homeless man from Romania has been banned from the UK after police discovered he was a convicted murderer.
The 59-year-old, who has not been named, was arrested for begging in Holborn in February. Officers then discovered he had been sentenced to 18 years for murder in his home country in 1975.
He was deported and barred from returning for 10 years “because he was not able to work and provide an income”, police said.
Under the Met’s Operation Nexus, launched in 2012, police make background checks on all foreign nationals taken into custody.
