A Highgate vet has warned dog owners to keep their pets on the lead near ponds after a duck was mauled in a park.
The white bird, whose leg was bitten in the attack, is now on the road to recovery thanks to the care of veterinarian Allan Rapley, who runs Highgate Vet in Highgate High Street. He told pet owners: “Keep your dogs away from ducks, and keep them on the head around the duck ponds.”
The duck was bitten on Wednesday in Waterlow Park. Concerned walkers erected a makeshift fence around the bird to protect it from other dog attacks before a veterinary student saw it limping and brought it in to Mr Rapley.
The duck is a domesticated American Pekin, and it is not known how it came to be roaming freely in the park.
Camden Council said the duck will be rehomed, and is set for a trial placement at Kentish Town City Farm.
