A man has been arrested on suspicion of fraud after posing as the Duke of Marlborough at a five-star hotel in King’s Cross and trying to make off without paying a £1,800 bill.
The 33-year-old, arrested in the early hours of this morning, arrived at the Great Northern Hotel claiming to be Lord Jamie Spencer.
Booking a room at the luxury hotel for four days – at a cost of more than £1,800 – the man was said by police to have then added to his bill by buying rounds of drinks for other guests.
After staff became suspicious of his true identity, he was approached and asked by hotel employees to settle up.
The man was said to have told staff he had no means to pay and left to his room.
He eventually tried to leave the hotel without paying his enormous bill and was detained by security staff, who called the police.
Found not to be the Duke of Marlborough by officers, he was arrested.
He is currently in custody and being questioned.
