Camden’s top policeman has suggested earlier green lights for cyclists – which have been adopted in Cambridge – should be considered if they can make the borough’s roads safer.

Ch Supt Ben-Julian “BJ” Harrington, himself a cyclist, said the scheme is something “to look at” as he issued an appeal to his fellow bikers to be more careful on the roads.

Cambridge has introduced a cycle-only traffic light at a four-way junction that turns green early, giving those on two wheels a head-start over cars.

Ch Supt Harrington brought up the measure at a briefing on Friday, saying it was worth considering “if you can demonstrate that it works”.

“It’s really important to be evidence based,” he added.

“I think it’s something for the highway authorities to look at.”

Ch Supt Harrington said police in Camden see improving cycling safety as an important issue.

Officers are being encouraged to issue penalties to reckless cyclists who jump red lights as part of the borough’s efforts to cut down on accidents.

“These people being irresponsible put my officers in a bad place,” said Ch Supt Harrington.

“They’re the ones who have to go and pick them up off the roads.”

He also stressed the importance of bike lights, wearing bright clothes and being wary of big vehicles.
