Camden, Barnet, Haringey and Westminster Councils are among 23 London authorities to have joined a city-wide crackdown on illegal tobacco.
The campaign has seen roadshows across London, including last week in Camden’s Inverness Road street market, where sniffer dogs, Public Health and Trading Standards officers and the Fire Brigade have been informing the public about the different types of illegal tobacco and the importance of stamping out the trade.
Last year the same campaign led to over 21,000 illegal tobacco products being seized in raids across 11 London boroughs, as a result of the intelligence gathered from the roadshows.
“Cllr Ray Puddifoot, London Councils’ health and care representative, said: “The threat of illegal tobacco should not be underestimated as it exposes young people to the dangers of smoking and undermines people’s efforts to improve their health by giving up smoking.”
Haringey are holding their roadshow at the Vue cinema in Wood Green tomorrow (Wed).
