ONE of Haringey Council's three burial sites could be leased out, without consultation with the public, as part of a bust meeting of Haringey Council's cabinet committee tonight.
A report to Haringey's cabinet meeting tonight recommends disposing of Enfield Crematorium and Cemetery.
The cabinet will also discuss a number of pressing issues, such as Haringey's financial position following cuts from the Government and the renovation of Hornsey depot.
More than £6.5million of investment is needed at the council's Enfield site to provide burial spaces and upgrade crematorium equipment to comply with new emissions standards.
But the Haringey Federation of Residents Association says it is concerned the council's other two sites - in Tottenham and Wood Green - could also be up for lease.
A report from the District Valuer Service states the Tottenham and Wood Green sites should also be considered. Because they are almost full they will soon be costing the council in maintenance without making them any profit, it says.
Secretary of the association, Dave Morris said: "Everyone should be concerned at the potential long term implications of this so called 'disposal' of a vital public service, and the failure to engage with the borough's residents."
A council spokesman said: "The recommendation is to lease Enfield and keep Wood Green and Tottenham. But this would include conditions on an external operator for issues like opening hours, safety and security."
