BOSSES at Camden Council have insisted the borough is well prepared for heavy snow this week despite being criticised for failing to grit enough roads.

The Met Office is predicting heavy snow in central London throughout tomorrow (Wednesday, January 6), with light snow showers following until the weekend with a maximum temperature of only 2C each day.

Deputy leader Andrew Marshall issued a missive on Monday promising to respond with every resource at the council's disposal to minimise disruption across the borough.

He said: "Maintenance crews are out tonight pre-gritting main roads, bus routes and other high priority areas, as per our winter plan. We will not grit main pavements tonight but will review the situation at 3am and 7am and ensure we grit them ahead of tomorrow if necessary."

Residents previously slammed the council for failing to stop side roads and pavements turning into ice rinks during the snow flurries that struck in December.

And not everyone has been impressed with the council's preparations since last month.

Liberal Democrat councillor for Hampstead Linda Chung has been inundated with complaints from residents in streets including Arkwright Road, Flask Walk, the Vale of Health, South Hill Park and Parliament Hill who were stuck in their houses during the last cold snap.

She said: "It's of little use gritting the main roads if everyone is marooned in the side streets."
