Controversial plans to bulldoze a parade of independent shops in Highgate and build 26 homes will be revealed to residents for the first time today (Friday, July 20).
Speculation over the redevelopment of a parade of shops and cafes in Swain’s Lane has been swirling for more than 20 years and rumours are rife that a Waitrose supermarket could replace the independent businesses.
The proposals for the land – owned by the Earl of Listowel – will be exhibited at St Anne’s Church in Highgate West Hill today (Friday, July 20) from 4pm to 8pm and tomorrow (Saturday, July 21) from 11am to 5pm.
Greengrocer Mickey Shamlain, who has run his fruit and vegetable store for two decades, said: “There has been a threat to this place all the time I’ve been here and the uncertainty is not good for the shopkeepers.
“I don’t think people will moan if they have a Waitrose. People like having independent shops but they don’t support us enough.”
