THANK Heavens for Joseph Connolly, an always entertaining restaurant reviewer but a rarity in that he understands that ordinary people like myself, who dine out only when we can afford to, are as interested in the atmosphere of the places we visit and the standard of service, as the food. The nosh is important, of course, but Joseph Connolly is right to rate service as of equal importance. I will always forgive shortcomings in the food if the staff try hard to make my visit as enjoyable as possible, but I find it extremely hard to forgive bad or lazy service even when the food is good. A lot of people I know feel the same.
