HEURELHO Gomes has told multi-millionaires Manchester City that their big names will win them nothing - just like last season.

Tottenham host Roberto Mancini's outfit at White Hart Lane two weeks today in the first match of the new Premier League season.

Spurs won the race for the fourth spot last season, sealing their spot in the Champions League qualifiers in front of City's fans with a 1-0 win at Eastlands.

While Spurs have been quiet in the transfer window, City have continued to recruit some of the world's hottest talent, splashing over 60million on Spain's David Silva, Barcelona anchorman Yaya Toure and Germany full-back Jerome Boateng,.

However, as Gomes prepares to face the world's richest club again, he has warned his big-spending rivals that their big names mean nothing.

"We never win with names," he said. "You have to prove yourself all the time on the pitch, as a team. They've got big names, but they didn't prove that they were the best last season. With the players they've got, they need to do more than last season. If they put their best on the pitch, then it's a great team."

While Gomes is undaunted by City's business this summer, he admits that Tottenham will need another big name of their own if they are to hold their own in the Champions League.

"I don't know if we will have new players arriving, but if quality players want to come here the door is open for them. We have a great squad but, for the Champions League, I think we need one more big player," he said.

Gomes also concedes that Spurs' opener against City could have a major impact on their ability to negotiate the two-legged Champions League qualifier in August and reach the group stages.

"We have to start well again, also to give ourselves confidence for the Champions League," said the Brazilian. "Three days after Man City we have a massive game in the Champions League. We don't know who the opposition is but normally in the Champions League it's a good game.

"We need to first make a good start to the season, and then we need to be sharp in all our games, because the Champions League is very different to the Premier League. I know how difficult it is."

Gomes was speaking after Thursday's 4-1 home defeat to Villarreal as Spurs suffered the first defeat of their pre-season campaign, in front of their own fans. However, he insists that the result means very little.

"Should the fans be worried? Of course not. We have two more games to pick up our best, Benfica away and Fiorentina, before we play Man City so we have time to prove that we can find our best," he said.

"It's still pre-season and it was my third day [on Thursday]. For all the players who were at the World Cup it's difficult to come back into a game like that. I think we need to improve and play better, but we have two weeks until pre-season finishes. I think after Fiorentina we will see how far we can go in the Champions League."
