Users of St John’s Wood Post Office have raised concerns about the proposed branch move to Charlbert Street.

The branch is set to move a quarter of a mile away to become part of St John’s Wood Food Store, renamed as SW Food Store.

The relocation is detailed in a consultation announced by the Post Office.

However one 82-year-old neighbour said she knew friends and other users of the shop who wouldn’t use the new branch if it moved.

She told the Wood&Vale: “I feel the move is a terrible mistake.

“We can’t do anything about them closing the shop, but I don’t agree with it being moved there.

In a letter to this newspaper, another user, Hervey Blake, said she was “disappointed” the store had been earmarked for closure. He also believes the new location isn’t suitable.

“This is a quiet residential street far from the life and bustle of the high street,” she said.

“St John’s Wood stretches out a long way and for those living the other side of Wellington Road it will be a fair walk to access Post Office services, and parking will be limited.”

The public consultation on the move will last until September 18.

The proposed new branch in Charlbert Street will have longer opening hours, and the majority of the current facilities will be available.

Roger Gale, Post Office’s network and sales director, said: “The most effective way to secure the long term viability of our services in St Johns Wood is through a retail partner and we are confident that our proposal is the best way of safeguarding services for years to come.”

The proposals follow a national trend by the Post Office to move branches into shops. This has been seen in Kentish Town, East Finchley and Crouch End. A consultation is currently underway in Camden Town into their plan to move two doors away in Camden High Street.

A former Post Office in Blenheim Terrace closed in 2003.

If the move is backed by the consultation, the branch will move into its new location in November.
