Children as young as six wowed an audience in Highgate on Friday evening (August 8) as they performed their own outdoor rendition of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
Kids from the Summer Shakespeare Workshop, which has been staging plays since 2004, transformed the garden of Holly Lodge Estate in Makepeace Avenue into a scene of romantic tragedy.
Starring Malaika Sabimana, 11, as Juliet, and Karna Majdian, nine, as Romeo, the group were challenged to tackle Shakespearean language and adapt the Bard’s play to their own interpretation.
Lisa Rose, actress and founder of the drama workshop, said: “This is all about getting children introduced to Shakespeare when they’re young, so they have an advantage when they study it at school.”
