A girls’ school has been given planning consent to expand a basement theatre space after work had already started to make it larger.

Channing School won approval from Haringey Council on Monday to enlarge a 2,000 square metre basement under its site in The Bank, Highgate, by seven per cent.

The basement, beneath the independent school’s performing arts building, has been expanded to provide extra storage for musical instruments, costumes and scenery.

Neighbour Louise Lewis, of Highgate Hill, said it was “irresponsible” of the school to expand the basement before being granted planning permission, but councillors unanimously approved the retrospective application.
