A WEST Hampstead charity supporting Jewish refugees in the UK is organising a celebration to mark the 70th anniversary of the government's decision to allow them into the country.

The event by the Association of Jewish Refugees which has a day centre on Cleve Road will be held at the Jewish Free School in Kenton on November 23.

Chairman of the kindertransport committee for the association, Erich Reich said: "We are celebrating one of the single most important decisions ever taken by the British government. Thanks to its intervention, some 10,000 children, myself included, were saved from certain death."

Sir Martin Gilbert will officially start the day off. Other well-known figures taking part include Esther Rantzen, Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks and Lord Greville Janner.
