Camden teenagers joined thousands of their peers around the country tto pick up their dreaded GCSE results.

Students from across the borough were celebrating some of the best results their schools have ever achieved.

All the 16-year-olds at South Hampstead High School achieved five A* to C grades including English and maths and many emerged with 10 or more A grades.

Headteacher Jenny Stephen said: "I am really very pleased with the A-Level and the GCSE results.

"43 per cent of the girls got eight or more A*s which is really something to celebrate.

"I am happy all round and just delighted for the girls, it means they can choose their futures and it opens doors for them."

One success story was Dawn Kanter, who achieved a whopping 11 A*s. She said: "I am very pleased but shocked. I did work really hard but you never know what is going to happen.

"I have tried to forget about it but I was very nervous the day before. I am really happy and I am now going to study English, maths, history and art.

"I am most excited about studying art because I love it and it is really fun."

Francis Holland School in Baker Street and Highgate school also celebrated success, with every student achieving five A* to C grades including maths and English.

Pupils from Haverstock also shone and achieved a massive improvement on last year's results -the number of students achieving five A* to C grades shot up by seven per cent.

One happy student was 16-year-old Nikita Limbu who, despite only arriving in the country from India a year ago, managed six A*s and four As.

"I feel great. I t has been really hard catching up on all the course work but the teachers were really helpful. I feel relieved now it's all over," she said.
