The Black Cap, in Camden High Street, was closed in April 2015 after serving as a popular venue for the gay community for six decades.

On Saturday, campaigners will perform songs and tributes outside of the pub as part of their battle to see it reopened.

They explained: “We want it back, the LGBTQ+ community want it back, Camden, London and many people from around the world want it back.”

Alex Green, who is part of the #WeAreBlackCap campaign, said they wanted “less flats more heels” – a reference to two planning applications to turn the upstairs floors into flats that were refused in 2013 and 2015.

He added: “Camden’s whole economy is built on its cultural and entertainment diversity and local people, and others from far and wide who come each year in their millions, demand that this to continues”.

The campaign said it counts Stephen Fry, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Paul O’Grady and Peter Tatchell among its supporters and more than 11,500 people have either joined its Facebook group or signed its petition.

Amy Lamé, Mayor Khan’s “night czar”, said she also backed the campaign to reopen the “iconic” venue.

She added: “As a former mayoress of Camden I am well aware of the huge importance of The Black Cap to both the LGBT+ community and the residents of Camden – with many thousands of people supporting the campaign to see it reopen.

“As London’s night czar, I am looking at how London can capitalise on its night-time economy and I am absolutely committed to backing LGBT+ venues as part of a diverse and thriving 24-hour London.

“I would love to see the Black Cap open once again, and will support the campaign in any way I can.”

The event starts outside the Black Cap at 1.30pm.

There will be songs at 2pm, speeches at 2.30pm and then more songs at 3pm.
