Camden bids a fond farewell to disability champion

A Camden stalwart and disability champion bid farewell to the borough at a leaving party last week.

Keith Shortman will leave Camden at the end of the month to return to Warrington to be with his family.

But he leaves with fond memories.

Mr Shortman, who suffers from severe learning disabilities, played a key role in helping to tackle disability hate crime and accompanied officers on a number of patrols.

He also appeared on Channel 4 documentary Sticks and Stones to raise awareness of how people with disabilities suffer from threats and violence.

Mr Shortman said: “People like me were being attacked by young people, but now it’s much better and I’m proud of what I’ve done.

“Some of the bullying and comments have stopped and things have generally improved a lot as people got to know me a bit more.”
