THIRTY firefighters battled a blaze at a bicycle shop in West Hampstead that caused thousands of pounds of damage.

CycleSurgery on West End Lane was closed when a fire broke out in the basement at 7.30pm on Saturday, prompting evacuation of flats above and the restaurant next door.

The blaze damaged the basement and the ground floor and fire crews battled until almost 10pm to put it out.

Laura Locke, from neighbouring La Brocca restaurant, said: "My sister alerted the fire brigade after we saw a lot of smoke coming into the conservatory at the back of the restaurant. All the diners were evacuated and we closed after that.

"The fire brigade kept us outside for about three hours and cordoned off the whole area. I have no idea why it started but they have had forensics in to try to find out why."

A spokesman for the shop said: "Due to a basement fire on Saturday January 17, our West Hampstead store will be closed for refurbishment until mid-February. Our nearest store is in just two miles away in Camden on Chalk Farm Road."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
