THE January transfer window duly closed and perhaps the most important piece of news for Tottenham Hotspur fans was that Dimitar Berbatov stayed at the Lane.

The 26-year-old had been linked with lucrative moves to Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City during the window after his agent claimed the striker wanted to leave for a "big" club in order to win trophies.

However, Berbatov's mind is now firmly fixed on helping the Lilywhites to glory in the Carling Cup final against London rivals Chelsea later this month following their outstanding 6-2 semi-final aggregate win over bitter rivals Arsenal.

"I am happy here, everyone is," Berbatov told Ham&High sport. "The performances against Arsenal were magnificent. The way we played and supported each other is exactly what I want to see. If we can play like that we have a great future.

"We showed what we are capable of against a very good Arsenal team with great players. We were above them and wanted to win more than they did - and we achieved it."

Although Spurs were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United at Old Trafford the Bulgarian international is already looking forward to stepping out at Wembley Stadium in the Carling Cup showdown on February 24.

"This will be my first game at Wembley and everyone is excited," said Berbatov. "The boys have told me it is a legendary stadium and I am looking forward to seeing it.

"I will relish the moment. It is one thing to watch a game at Wembley, another to actually play there.

"There were no words to describe the noise and the atmosphere against Arsenal. In the end we did it for every fan of Tottenham. Now, let's hope we can do it again for them at Wembley."

Berbatov, who enjoyed a sensational first season at Tottenham - he scored 23 goals in all competitions - feels the club is making good progress under new coach Juande Ramos and believes the Spaniard has made a massive difference since taking over from Martin Jol in October.

"We have great players and a coach who can achieve a lot with us," he said. "I am not surprised how quickly he [Ramos] has turned it around. He is a great coach and proved himself in Spain.

"Now he is here and the way he talks and works with us, we know we can go places.

"We showed that this club can challenge for trophies."

Berbatov, who was signed for £10.9million from Bayer Leverkusen by Jol two years ago, is also chasing silverware in Europe with Spurs this season.

The Lilywhites have reached the knock-out stages of the Uefa Cup and meet Slavia Prague tonight (Thursday) in the first of two legs for a place in the last 16.
