TOTTENHAM's goal-filled start to the season continued on Wednesday night as they trounced Doncaster Rovers 5-1 to book their place in the third round of the Carling Cup.

Harry Redknapp's side made it four wins out of four this season, with 14 goals scored, as Peter Crouch claimed his first goal since his 10m summer transfer from Portsmouth.

Crouch, yet to start a league game for Spurs this season, ended any possibility of an upset against the Championship side by heading home to make it 3-0 lead following earlier strikes from Tom Huddlestone and Jamie O'Hara that had silenced the Keepmoat Stadium.

But it was the performance of David Bentley that was the main talking point among Spurs fans as the out-of-favour midfielder scored the fourth goal with a superb left-footed shot.

The England star, who endured a torrid first season at the Lane, looked set to move on before the end of the month after his recent drink-driving charge, but Redknapp suggested he will now stay at the club and challenge for a first-team place.

"If David Bentley keeps working hard, he will get this chance," said Redknapp. "Doncaster played some great football, but I am lucky that I've rested players here and still had a very attacking line-up."

Redknapp's fringe players were too good for their Yorkshire hosts, who were 2-0 behind before the game had really settled down, Huddlestone's fierce drive from the edge of the box beating Ben Smith, and then Jamie O'Hara doubling the lead with an exquisite chip.

Crouch's header ended the game as a contest, and it threatened to turn into a rout when Bentley made it four just seven minutes after the restart.

Although a handball by another player on a comeback, Kevin Prince-Boateng, handed Rovers a lifeline just past the hour mark, a fifth from Roman Pavlyuchenko, who started alongside Crouch up front, saw Spurs complete a third successive away win in a week.

The draw for the third round takes place on Saturday, and on this form a third successive final appearance does not look beyond the Lilywhites.
