Cllr Basson's resignation means that a by-election must take place for his council seat on Thursday April 2.
The Lib Dems were quick to stake their claim for retaining the seat, circulating leaflets in the Belsize ward on Monday night. The Conservatives have already named Belsize businessman Gary Benardout as their candidate.
It was a major shock in 2006 when three Lib Dem candidates, Chris Basson, Alexis Rowell and Arthur Graves, were elected at the expense of three leading Tory councillors including their party leader on the council, Piers Wauchope. Also ousted were Sheila Gunn and Jonny Bucknell, who cut short his holiday in Devon after hearing the resignation news.
