The struggle for the marginal parliamentary seat of Hornsey and Wood Green has kicked off – with Labour MP Catherine West and Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate Dawn Barnes fighting over the key issue of Brexit.
Hornsey and Wood Green secured the fourth highest remain group in the country, with 81.5 per cent of voters wishing to stay in the European Union.
Labour MP Catherine West ousted Liberal Democrat Lynne Featherstone with a majority of 11,058 in 2015.
Ms Barnes has claimed that as a Liberal Democrat, she can offer a real alternative, as her party will fight against a hard Brexit and to keep Britain in the single market.
She said: “This election is a huge opportunity for voters in Haringey to change the direction of our country and prevent a disastrous hard Brexit.
“For all those who want to protect our local economy by staying in the Single Market and ensure the people have the final say over what comes next, this is your chance.”
Labour MP Catherine West, however, has remained a staunch remainer, voting against triggering Brexit on February 8.
She said: “As a founder of the cross-party EU-UK All Parliamentary Party Group that looks at how Brexit will affect different sectors, I understand the importance of the EU. I voted and will continue to vote in the interests of my constituents and the national interest,”
She added: “The Liberal Democrats voted three different ways on Article 50, so their support is not in anyway unanimous on stopping Brexit.”
The Conservatives have yet to announce a candidate.
