Campaigners celebrated the opening of new lifts at Hampstead Heath Overground station following a lengthy campaign backed by comedian Sue Perkins and guitarist John Etheridge.
The Uplift for Hampstead campaign fought for more than 10 years to get them installed to help elderly and disabled people reach nearby Royal Free Hospital in Pond Street.
Spearheaded by estate agent Jonathan Bergman, the campaign won the support of such high profile South End Green residents as top jazz guitarist John Etheridge, who attended the celebrations this week, and comedian and The Great British Bake-Off presenter Sue Perkins.
Ms Perkins, 44, who described herself as a passionate supporter of both public transport and the NHS, said: “It’s one of London’s biggest and best hospitals, so to not provide lift access for these patients was anomalous and silly.
“I’m just delighted that’s been rectified. I think it’s extremely important, it always was a ridiculous oversight.
