A library action group hosted a special event last week to celebrate World Book Night.

Around 25 people turned up to hear award-winning author Andrew Blackman give a reading of his new novel A Virtual Love at Highgate Library in Shepherds Hill on Tuesday. Those who attended also received free books donated by publishers.

The event, organised by the Friends of Highgate Library and staff, was among hundreds of literary celebrations taking place around the country to mark World Book Night, which aims to promote literacy.

Mr Blackman is author of On the Holloway Road, which won the Luke Bitmead Writer’s Bursary and was shortlisted for the Dundee International Book Prize.

His new novel, which has just been published, deals with identity in the age of social networking.

The book reading was also an opportunity to recruit more members to the library’s action group.
