Striker Alan Smith turned down a contract extension after the emergence of new partnership Ian Wright and Kevin Campbell.
Smith, dropped for the last three games, admitted: "I have to play first-team football. Not being in the Arsenal team is not doing my England chances any good. The European championship is getting closer and I really do want to go.''
Meanwhile, the Gunners stretched their unbeaten run to 12 games after a 3-1 win at Norwich City - Wright netting twice and Campbell scoring the other.
"So much for boring Arsenal," quipped Arsenal manager George Graham afterwards.
