David Platt headed an 83rd minute winner as Arsenal beat Manchester United 3-2 at Highbury.
Arsenal nemesis Teddy Sheringham struck twice for United after Nicolas Anelka and Patrick Vieira put Arsenal 2-0 up before Platt's late strike.
"Platt's goal was very important - not just for us, but for English football," said Arsene Wenger.
"Everybody was scared United would come here and win and start running away with the league.
"We were really only expecting a point today - at half time I thought we'd even probably lose - so it was important for us to win a big game at home.
