Arsenal went some way to avenging their 1-0 FA Cup final loss to Ipswich the previous May by hammering Bobby Robson's side 4-1 at Highbury.
Two Frank Stapleton headers cancelled out Paul Mariner's early opener for the visitors and Sammy Nelson made it 3-1 just before the interval. Immediately after the restart, Stapleton completed his hat trick when he flicked home Liam Brady's free kick and Brady still had time to see his late penalty saved by Ipswich 'keeper Paul Cooper.
Arsenal moved upto fifth and afterwards manager Terry Neill said: "We played well, I believe we can win this league.
