An Arsenal fan was stabbed in the leg, and two others suffered head injuries, before Wednesday's match in Rome.

The stab victim was attacked after Roma fans boarded a bus taking Arsenal supporters to the Stadio Olimpico before the 7-6 shoot-out win.

None of the injuries are life-threatening and the stab victim is understood to have later travelled to the stadium to watch the game.

A British Embassy spokesman explained: "This bus got a bit lost around the stadium and some Roma fans tried to get on the bus.

"One managed to get on to the bus and there was a fight. The driver managed to get away when the Roma fan was pushed out.

"We don't know if it was a stabbing or glass from a smashed window."

Arsenal had earlier warned supporters of potential troublespots in the city after Roma followers, nicknamed the Ultras, had attacked Manchester United fans in previous years.

Arsenal confirmed they were aware of the incident.

A spokeswoman added: "A male Arsenal fan was believed to be stabbed outside the stadium.
