An open letter to all MPs to join the fight for the health of children and the elderly in North West London, particularly to those MPs most local to our area, Tulip Siddiq, Keir Starmer, Mike Freer and Karen Buck.

It is reassuring that the government is taking seriously the danger to the lungs of those young and old, of toxic fumes from polluting vehicles and that they are now taking active new measures to deal with the complexity of pollution causing agents.

The danger to children in 55 schools in Hampstead and Belsize remain with the advent of HS2, the displacement of traffic caused by CS11 and the massive lorry movements required for HS2 and the imminent mammoth developments of 100 Avenue Road, the Royal Free immunology unit and the two barracks on either side of Regent’s Park.

Knowing their interest in the health of constituents and in particular, the health of our children, I am writing to invite them to put down an early day motion calling on the Minister of Transport and TfL to undertake further impact studies on the likely increase in toxic fumes in North West London and neighbouring areas from lorries needed for HS2 and the developments mentioned and on the combined impact of CS11 and HS2 on the fragile road network.

I would very much like to hear from any of them who may wish to accept my invitation.

The photo above of children and their parents doing their best to warn people that their health is threatened has captured the imagination of many.

But, it is not just the children who live in Hampstead and Belsize who will suffer – over 11,000 children go to school in Hampstead every day who do not live here. They come from many other boroughs and constituencies and the support of their respective MPs is sought.

Time is of the essence and action in relation to the Minister of Transport and TfL must be swift and decisive. I look forward to hearing from MPs who set down the requested early day motion.
