Ajax Amsterdam defender Thomas Vermaelen is expected to complete his move to Arsenal before the weekend.
The imminent arrival of the Belgium international will appease fans who have been calling on Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to strengthen the Gunners' creaking defence.
"Moving to Arsenal is the right path for me," Vermaelen, 23, told Algemeen Dagblad this week.
"It is a great sporting challenge and I will also be financially better off. I think everything is going to be okay.'
