A group of seven mums from Highgate - including actress Juliet Stevenson - are planning a summer of action in support of Europe's refugees.
Just a month since being conceived, the Highgate Has Heart initiative is already rallying supporters, and hopes it can make a big difference.
The group plans to enlist support from across north London, and is calling on people to help with fundraising or to volunteer their services to tackle Europe’s refugee crisis.
Juliet, whose film roles include parts in Bend it Like Beckham, Mona Lisa Smile and Emma, told the Ham&High: “It’s a great, great group. We’ve known each other for years through our children.
“The group is incredibly exciting.
“We’re finding that people are saying they would love to do something, but the problem is so huge.
“We thought the problem is huge, but it breaks down into different components. There’s lots people can do.”
She spoke of her heartbreak at visiting The Jungle refugee camp in Calais, where she has met a huge number of people doing their bit to help.
Julia herself funded a bus used by the Help Refugees group, which has collected and distributed vital supplies for those most in need.
“We want to harness people’s compassion and do something to help,” she said.
Friend Lynne Gray added: “We were discussing what we can do to raise awareness and support charities from a fundraising point of view and a supporting point of view.”
Funds raised by campaigners will be split between three good causes – Help Refugees, Citizens UK and the Islington Centre for Refugees.
It has set a £100,000 fundraising target, and will also point people in the direction of places where they can make a difference.
They plan to enable people, young and old alike, to host events over the summer.
A crowdfunding page has been set up at crowdfunding.justgiving.com/hhh, and the group has a website at highgatehasheart.com. To get involved, email firstname.lastname@example.org
