Proms at St Jude’s is not just for grown-ups. This year’s festival includes three great concerts for children aged 3+ and families – all free. There’s also a guided local walk designed for children aged 6+, with no charge for kids.

The brilliant score of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf and Other Wild Tales bursts into life at 12.45pm on Saturday, June 21. The Little Wolf Gang will create a thrilling theatrical interaction between live music and storytelling to enchant the whole family. Storyteller Martin Maudsley is a master craftsman, telling old tales with new resonance. He is joined by five-star performers Edward Jay on accordion, David Adams on bassoon, and Fiona Barrow on violin.

On Thursday, June 26, children can enjoy a musical journey. The Nonesuch Orchestra (patron Julian Lloyd Webber) will be performing a feast of music from different times and places. Called The Sound of Strings, the lunchtime concert includes works by Mussorgsky and Holst.

On the following Saturday, June 28, there is a double treat. At 11am join a guided walk and learn about What Houses Do For Us. You’ll take a look at the features of houses that keep us dry and warm and learn how the designers of Hampstead Garden Suburb dwellings turned practical necessity into architecture.

At 12.45 pm traditional music specialists Lucie Skeaping, presenter of BBC Radio 3’s Early Music Show, and Roddy Skeaping, bring their Musical Mystery Tour. It explores the history of music from primitive times to Mozart, with jokes, play-acting and a host of musical instruments from the rebec to the bum fiddle. The audience gets into the act as well, with enthusiastic foot stamping and singing.

No need to book for the concerts, but buy adult tickets for the walk (£8) at promsatstjudes.org.uk or call 020 3322 8123.
