A north London supermarket unveiled a multi-million pound refurbishment this morning (September 4) with welcoming staff handing out chocolate and tote bags.

Edward Caswell, branch manager and leader of the supermarket's 174-strong team, said: "Having been a proud part of this community for over three decades, we are excited to unveil a refreshed store designed entirely around our customers.

"The new updates make shopping seamless and enjoyable – a destination for food lovers.

"We can't wait for our customers to experience the new space."

The store's upgraded meat counter includes a dry-aged beef cabinet selling premium British cuts from farms with high animal welfare standards and the drink section features an extensive selection of award-winning wines.

Launch day saw the first shoppers welcomed with complimentary tote bags and a glass of prosecco or orange juice.

There was also a personalised Tony’s Chocoloney giveaway, along with tastings of Waitrose No.1 products and samples from The Estate Dairy which will be handed out throughout the reopening weekend.

The refurbishment is part of Waitrose’s wider investment in its national estate, which includes both new openings and store upgrades - including a new full-line food store in Cricklewood.

The 18,000 square foot store in Cricklewood Broadway is due to open this autumn and is part of a multi-year, £1bn programme to improve products, service and the in-store experience.

As well as new stores the brand is refurbishing 28 stores this year and expanding into airport travel, launching in Heathrow Terminal 2.

Waitrose Finchley is located at 273 Ballards Lane, N12, and is open: 8am to 9pm from Monday to Saturday and on Sunday from 11am to 5pm.
