A new service is offering a lifeline to those who feel lonely or disconnected from their community.

Enabling Connections, launched by Age UK Barnet and funded by Age UK national, offers free, volunteer-led support for up to six months to help older people in Barnet regain confidence, rebuild social connections, and re-engage with their community.

The scheme is open to anyone aged 55 and over living in Barnet who is experiencing loneliness or isolation, including those living alone, recovering from illness, adjusting to retirement, or recently bereaved. It also supports people recently diagnosed with dementia who can engage with short-term volunteer support.

Rebecca Bayne, home support manager at Age UK Barnet, said: "Sometimes all someone needs is a bit of encouragement and a friendly face to help them take the next step."

Volunteers work one-to-one with individuals to set personal goals, whether that’s joining a group, getting out for a walk, learning to use a smartphone, or reconnecting with old friends.

All volunteers are DBS-checked, trained, and supported by Age UK Barnet.

Referrals can be made by calling 0208 150 0967, emailing enablingconnections@ageukbarnet.org.uk, or completing the referral form on the Age UK Barnet website. The service also offers digital support for those who are housebound.
