The new sign has just been hung, and the final touches of blue paint are being applied to Hampstead's new 'proper pub' in South End Green.

What was once The White Horse - and most recently The South End Green Social - is now under new management frrom the people behind The Tufnell Park Tavern.

They have renamed the Victorian boozer The Fleet Tavern in honour of the road it stands on and London's underground river that has its source on nearby Hampstead Heath.

The original ceiling tiles, marble fireplace, and mahogany bar with etched glass details have been retained - although the bar has been moved 90 degrees and positioned towards the back of the large light-filled room.

A new open kitchen behind it will serve a Mediterranean menu of grilled meats, Spanish meatballs, fish stew and roasted aubergine - chalked up on a board on the back wall.

New wood panelling and downstairs loos have also been added to the pub, which has been closed since January.

The Fleet Tavern will not play any music and its taps will pour Mediterranean lagers such as Birra Moretti, along with four pumps offering a changing roster of real ales.

The Ham&High can reveal the newly christened pub will open its doors to the public in time for the bank holiday weekend later this month.

Fred Wright, of Stanley Pubs, said: "We like to keep our pubs simple.

"All three doors will be entrances into one main bar. You can sit where you like and order at the bar from whatever is on the chalk board - no QR codes or paper menus - and a lunch board outside will have a £9.50 offer that changes every day.

"The new sign has just gone up and we are looking forward to making this into a proper pub again. All over the bank holiday weekend there will be a relaxed party atmosphere - we can't wait."

The Fleet Tavern opens next weekend at 156 Fleet Road, South End Green.
