Visitors to The Freud Museum can see props from a new film about the legendary psychiatrist starring Sir Anthony Hopkins - including a replica of the famous analysts' couch.

Freud's Last Session is released in UK cinemas on 14 June and imagines meetings between the father of psychoanalysis and author CS Lewis at the Hampstead home where Freud spent the last year of his life.

A perfect recreation of the famous couch was made for the film based on the original in Freud's former study at the museum.

Freud moved to Maresfield Gardens after escaping Nazi-occupied Austria on the eve of the Second World War. A full replica was recreated for the shoot in Dublin, with Matthew Goode playing The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe author, and Liv Lisa Fries as Freud's analyst daughter Anna.

The film interweaves past, present and fantasy as Freud and CS Lewis challenge each other over science, religion, faith and the existence of God as well as exploring Freud’s relationship with Anna.

On display at The Freud Museum are ten hand-drawn set designs for the film  - including pencil sketches for Freud's study - by designer Luciana Arrighi, who won the Oscar for her work on Howards End.

Other props include the replica couch on which Freud's patients lay. The museum has reconstructed the interior of Freud's Vienna home of 47 years with objects and photographs from the family archive, as well as narration by Liv Lisa Fries.

So visitors will be able to spend time on ‘Sir Anthony Hopkins’s couch’ before heading downstairs to see the original.

Freud Museum director Giuseppe Albano said, “The care with which Freud’s final home in London has been recreated for the film is quite astonishing and I am sure people who know the Museum or visit us after seeing the film will be impressed."

"It is exciting to be able to place Sir Anthony Hopkins’s couch and the beautiful set designs alongside Freud’s original possessions in the family home. Everybody is welcome to come and recline – either in preparation for the film or to delve deeper into Freud’s life."

To mark the release of the film, anyone seeing Freud’s Last Session at the Phoenix Cinema East Finchley will receive 50% off admission to the Freud Museum on presentation of their ticket.

The Freud Museum is at 20, Maresfield Gardens Hampstead NW3, and Freud’s Last Session opens on 14 June from Vertigo Releasing.
