Camden’s new mayor has taken office at a ceremony at the Town Hall.

St Pancras and Somers Town ward councillor Samata Khatoon will take on the role for the next year.

Elected in 2010, Cllr Khatoon previously worked as a senior youth worker in Camden and as a family support worker in Islington.

Cllr Khatoon, who is the mother of three children, said her “foremost goal” during her mayoralty would be to support young people in the borough.

She has chosen to support Somers Town children’s theatre charity Scene & Heard and youth homelessness charity New Horizon Youth Centre over the next year.

Cllr Khatoon said: “I am particularly focused on supporting young people who are at risk of homelessness.

“The impact of homelessness on young people is profound, affecting their education, employment prospects, and overall wellbeing, often leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.”

She replaces Cllr Nazma Rahman as Camden Mayor. The West Hampstead councillor raised more than £30,000 for Young Camden Foundation over her year in office.

Kilburn councillor Eddie Hanson has been named as the new deputy mayor of Camden, taking over from Cllr Khatoon.
