An elderly couple “could have been killed” after a rotten trellis fell from a neighbouring block of flats - landing right outside their front door.

Chris Halliburton and his wife Sally first found debris from the crumbling trellis outside their home in Belsize Grove in March.

According to their daughter, Sienna Halliburton, the couple, who live next door to flats owned by Notting Hill Genesis, immediately contacted the housing association to tell them what had happened.

She claims that Notting Hill Genesis did not help to clear the trellis, forcing her parents to pay hundreds of pounds to clear the wreckage.

Sienna says that no action was taken to make the remaining trellis on the building safe, and that this allowed a further section to fall in the same place last week (November 13).

She told Ham and High: “It’s pretty rank stuff that falls down, it’s all rotten metal and wood.

“It is just completely unacceptable. It is really dangerous because it fell from a height.

“If someone was walking out of the door at the time, they would have been dead.

"It’s not a small issue. The rest of it is still up there and it’s still rotten.”

Sienna added that she has also now complained to the housing association as she fears for the safety of her parents, who are both aged over 75.

Notting Hill Genesis has now apologised for the delay in rectifying the problem with the rotting trellis, blaming a consultation with its residents.

The housing association added that its service charge consultation will be completed in December and that it expects “full renewal of the trellis” in the new year.

A spokesperson said: “We are sorry for the inconvenience caused to our neighbours and understand their frustration.”

They added: “We are sorry that on the most recent occasion the clearing away of the fallen trellis took longer than anticipated.

“When we were informed of the fallen trellis we made arrangements for it to be removed immediately.

“Unfortunately, the neighbour advised us it was still there the following day.”

Notting Hill Genesis said that the trellis has now been taken away, and that contractors have made safe the parts of the trellis that remain on the building.

The housing association added that it will try to get issues like this "right first time" in future.
