There have been busy times as well as business as usual for the Highgate Society this autumn.
Our Halloween event for families and children supported by 25 plus shops, restaurants and pubs was hugely successful. Check out the Ham&High article online for some amazing costumes and make up. Plans are already in hand for 2024.
This event raised vital funds to support the popular Christmas lights, which bring life and light to the high street, including Pond Square, with its switching on ceremony drawing many visitors to our village.
Shops, pubs and restaurants go the extra mile to make their indoor spaces and windows a feast of colour. Don’t miss the window display in the bow window of the former vets and do visit the Christmas Market on December 2 at the old bus stand.
Decorative lighting in trees and on lamp posts brings a special magic to Pond Square. The extra bonus being all who come from far and wide to enjoy the annual festive Carols – put December 13 in your diaries - can read song sheets and keep an eye on children while the fantastic musicians from Highgate School can see to play their instruments.
That evening as usual, the door of 10 A Pond Square opposite will be wide open for our Highgate Society volunteers to welcome all comers for mulled wine, mince pies with soft drinks for children.
This Highgate Society door is frequently open for the community throughout the year for everything from Saturday coffee mornings, to talks, concerts, social gatherings and special events such as Fair in the Square.
Pass by 10A on a Saturday morning and you will see a warm light in the beautiful curved window promising a warm welcome with coffee, tea, biscuits and cake and friendly company all for £2. If you come alone, someone will greet you and make you feel at home.
The Society has much to offer with planning advice, painting, poetry groups and more but we also need your support in return. We rent our space from the HLSI and must generate income to cover costs. Recently refurbished to a high standard, this is an ideal space for regular lettings or one-off gatherings and parties, being central and fully accessible.
We are also always looking for more volunteers: guerrilla gardening, social events, planning and transport - take your pick or offer your expertise and time in other ways.
